A motion is a formal request made to the court asking for a ruling or order on a specific issue or aspect of your case. The motion may ask that the court do or refrain from doing something, including directing others to do or refrain from doing something. It may be necessary to make requests of the court as your case progresses. These are done in writing. Sometimes motions require evidentiary hearings and sometimes they do not. The government may also file motions with the court. If you do not understand a motion your lawyer or the government has filed in your case you should ask your lawyer about it.
